The Carrington Event Blog has invited us to learn more about the real possibility that in fact would be catastrophic.
The Carrington Event happened more than a century and a half, it's an explosion of solar magnetism that affects the balance of the earth, and basically unusable leaves exposed power lines.
Today, 99% of countries do not have mechanisms to prevent this happening. They can only, at best, get an alert within 15 minutes before you get the magnetic flare.
The main effect would overload any electrical device electrical transformers connected to the network would burn. Off planet satellites would have no protection and no longer work. Basically, we would return to 1800.
